Curbing Myopia in Kids to Provide Clearer Vision

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is on the rise globally: 30% of the world currently has myopia, and it’s estimated that half the global population will have myopia by 2050. In the US, incidences of myopia nearly doubled from the early 70s to the early 2000s.

Thankfully, there are ways to combat myopia and give kids clearer vision. See if your child is a myopia control candidate. Visit See B. Seen Eyecare to have your child’s eyes examined.

Why Is Myopia Control Important?

You may be thinking, “Myopia is a common enough refractive error; why is it so crucial to control it in children? Won’t glasses be good enough to correct their vision?”

Well, high myopia can occur when myopia progresses from a young age. It increases the risk of vision-threatening conditions, like cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

While children are still growing and developing, we can slow the progression of their myopia. This reduces the chance of high myopia and can even prevent them from developing a high prescription.

Our Myopia Control Methods

Research shows that certain types of contact lenses can be effective in slowing myopia. Provide your child with improved vision with our preferred myopia control contacts.

Ortho-K

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses are gas permeable contact lenses made of a rigid enough plastic to reshape the cornea gently while the wearer uses them. Ortho-k lenses are worn overnight and removed each morning. When they’re removed, your child will enjoy clear vision throughout the day. Ortho-k lenses have been effective in slowing myopia.

Soft lenses may be easier for some children to wear, and soft multifocal lenses have been proven effective in myopia control. The bulls-eye shape of the different prescription areas on these lenses helps change the way light refracts. This enables the eye to focus differently and slows eye growth, hampering myopia progression.
