Types of Laser Eye Surgery
From refractive surgeries to lens replacements, many types of laser eye surgery options are available today.
LASIK
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most well-known and commonly performed type of laser eye surgery. This refractive surgery corrects vision problems by altering the shape of your cornea.
During LASIK, a surgeon cuts a thin flap in the cornea with a laser or blade; then, they use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea to fix refractive errors.
PRK
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a refraction correction surgery. It works similarly to LASIK, but there’s no flap cut into the eye. Instead, a thin layer of cells is entirely removed before the surgeon uses the reshaping laser. Then, a bandage-like contact is placed over the eye during recovery.
SLT
Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a laser surgery that reduces pressure in the eye. The laser targets the drainage tissue in the eye and is typically used to manage open-angle glaucoma.
YAG
YAG laser treatment is used as a follow-up to cataract replacement surgery. It targets a thin membrane behind the intraocular lens that may cloud and interfere with vision.
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is one of the most common and effective eye surgeries in the United States. In some cases, a laser may be used to soften the cataract before lens removal. Lasers can also be used to make the initial incision.
